A single central steel spine, made to carry the treads and give the staircase a clean, open look.
A local joinery company asked us to make a steel monostring staircase. A monostring uses one central steel spine instead of two side stringers, with each tread sitting on its own bracket. It leaves the sides open, so the staircase looks light and lets the light through.
With only one spine, all the strength has to come from that single piece of steel and the way it is welded. The brackets also have to line up exactly, so every tread sits level and the rise and going stay the same from the bottom step to the top. Any error shows straight away on a staircase this open.
We worked from the joinery company's measurements and set out the spine and the bracket positions before any welding started. Each bracket was set to the same height and angle, then fully welded to the spine and cleaned up for a neat finish.
Working with a joinery company is a good fit. They handle the timber and the finish, and we make the steel underneath that holds it all up.
A strong, clean monostring staircase, ready for the joinery company's treads and finish. Made from start to finish in our Little Hulton workshop.
